LEARNING DISABILITIES, ADD AND ADHD

Nathan, ADHD, Middle School  (Testimony by mother)

-          "Some huge changes are happening for Nathan as a result of the neurotherapy.  He learned in his school project on cells that he could actually produce high quality work on his own.  It was a very empowering experience, and it is beginning to feed through into his other work...to produce sustained, focused, and organized work at school."

-          "Nathan did so well on his cell project that his teacher thought he had cheated!"

Allyson, ADHD First Grader   (Testimony by mother who is a Neuropsychologist)

"She is so much better in the social world.  I do not think this is the Concerta.  Concerta helps you attend to cues but I don't think it has much impact on emotional volatility.  The other day a friend of hers was practicing Karate kicks and aimed a Karate kick at her tummy and she connected.  In months past, Allyson would have gotten up screaming, arms across the chest and screamed, "You did that on purpose!"  This time she got up.  The girl said, "Oh, I'm sorry."  The girl took her to the teacher and told the teacher what happened about her tummy hurting. Six months ago she would have had a tantrum and not been able to function in a learning environment for the rest of the day.  She is much better at letting go of the little insults that happen every day."

"In many respects parenting is getting easier.  There is a loss of tension in her face.  Even without the glasses (not squinting) she is more relaxed and that's a nice thing to see.  We had gone to the pool. A boy was swimming and she swam over to him trying to engage him in swimming with her.  He wasn't interested.  In the past she would have been obnoxious to get his attention.  Instead some other girls came over and they ended up doing the swimming in circles thing.  She is much more attentive and responsive to the social universe."

Jason, ADHD, age 13

I wanted to share an experience our thirteen-year-old son had shortly after

beginning his sessions with Dr. Ross to help him with his ADHD issues.

We began coming about once a week, beginning on February 21. By the time   baseball season arrived we were about ten sessions into treatment. Although my son is very athletic, he has never enjoyed the success one would expect him to have. Baseball was no exception...except for this year. After his first game he came away having batted 5 for 5 and was given the game ball. After his second game, he was now 11 for 11. The Coaches and other kids on the team couldn't believe how well he was seeing the ball. They also saw him showing much more composure and patience when making plays in the field. He has since been moved to a starting position on the roster and is batting clean-up.

My wife and I made a conscious decision not to tell his Teachers or Coaches about our son's participation in Biofeedback and his work with Dr. Ross. We wanted to see if they would notice a positive change in him. They have, so have we and so has our son. We all can't help but attribute his recent success either in part or in whole to the work he has been doing here at Advanced Neurotherapy.

Thanks,

            Jason's Dad

Anita, mother of two severely Learning Disabled, ADHD girls aged 13 and an ADHD boy age 17

-          "Before I leave this Earth, the one thing I want to give them is a better working brain so they can be independent. That is what you promised me and that is what's happening."

-         One of her daughters had Ambyopia (lazy eye) for which she was to have surgery.  Dr. Ross said, "Give me some time."  Neurotherapy corrected her eye and she did not need surgery.

Joshua, Middle Aged Adult ADD, Dyslexia, Mood Disorder

-          "My business---selling fine woods for musical instruments--was floundering and I was depressed and unfocused.  Ever since I could remember, I had suffered from dyslexia, ADD, and mood problems.  At the suggestion of my physician, I engaged in treatment at Advanced Neurotherapy, noticing increased energy, focus, productivity, and success."

-          "She is happy and confident. Dr. Ross has given us our family back, but most importantly, she has given our daughter the tools to succeed in life."

-          "When we 1st came to Neurotherapy we were at our wits end with our daughter. Her behavior at home was out of control and wreaking havoc on our family life. Also the little girl who once loved going to school now dreaded it. The worst part was you could see how badly she wanted to stop, but was unable to do so. After many weeks of testing, counseling, and the prospect of having to start her on medication we came to see Dr. Ross. From the moment we entered the office she understood our desire to help our child and how hopeless we felt. We started Neurotherapy and after a few treatments we thought we noticed a change, we however were cautious in our excitement because we weren't sure if it was a real change or just what we wanted to see. After a few weeks the change was noticeable. Now she is flourishing in school. Having been released from all her Individual Education Plans and getting A's on her report card. She is happy and confident."  (She has lost her Dyslexia diagnosis).

He's much better with his sister - when he's with other kids he'll say 'she's my sister and I want her to play with us!'"  (Quotes from mother)

Maria, age 11, many diagnoses, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Non Verbal Learning Disability  (Testimony by mother)

AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISODERS and ASPERGER'S SYNDROME

Mom of two elementary school children, one with Asperger's Syndrome, the other with Cerebral Palsy and Depression,

"Neurofeedback was the most important thing I did."

Nathan, 5 years old, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)

Imagine a life with little communication, where it is a challenge to convey such simple needs as using the bathroom or expressing any form of emotion and thought beyond moans, whines, and cries.  Nathan, first diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) at eighteen months, lived in such a world.

Until recently, Nathan had been on multiple medications, causing his mother concern regarding the side effects he was experiencing. Seeking alternatives for her five-year-old son, Nathan’s mother brought him to my office for Neurotherapy. With weekly Neurotherapy treatments, and no medications, he has shown significant improvements; he is calmer and free of medication side effects.

His mother reports that, after only fourteen sessions, Nathan has fewer tantrums, makes more fluid transitions, and more effectively expresses his emotions. He is even winning behavior awards at school. Nathan is also more aware of his body and his surroundings. He is now able to recognize the physical need to go to the bathroom and is successfully toilet training. With this new-found awareness, he is able to express remorse, recently saying to his mother, “I’m sorry momma. Are you okay?” Nathan is also showing more spontaneity and interactional play, and points out things that interest him such as a passing train and its cars.  Friends, relatives, and teachers are all amazed at how much more socially competent and verbal he is.

The most life-altering change, however, has been Nathan’s increased ability to express himself.  Before Neurotherapy, Nathan had limited verbal and communication skills, leaving him frustrated and unable to express his physical or emotional needs. Since Neurotherapy, he has begun to form longer, more complete sentences and is able to articulate his thoughts more coherently.  This improved communication allowed Nathan to tell his mother he had a pain in his leg and to show her exactly where it was. Several months earlier, Nathan had begun limping and physicians had been unable to find the cause. MRI studies were confined to his hips and knees until he was able to provide this critical information. As a result, physicians found the benign tumor in his leg that caused him so much distress. What a victory for this child!

Joseph, High School Student, Severely obsessive, Non-verbal Learning Disability (Autistic Spectrum)

At the end of treatment Joseph is "happier, is running on the track team, has friends   there both girls and boys, does his Home work without being told.  He got all A's and B's except in English because of the theory of mind business.  He loves Italian.  He has a great sense of humor, is a loving and endearing person.  He had been good earlier but later in middle school he had problems.  Neurotherapy helped to insure that some major thoroughfares got connected.  He is no longer obsessive, no longer needs the supplements (Inositol)."

Cindy, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)

At the age of just twenty-two months, Cindy was diagnosed with a Pervasive  Developmental Disorder, or PDD.  According to her mother, everything about Cindy was different from day one. The differences between Cindy and her other siblings started with an arduous birth. Then her mother noticed that when she was breastfeeding, Cindy would not make eye contact with her. Cindy learned a few words at five months old, then her progress halted and she didn't say any new words until age two.

As she got older, Cindy started throwing temper tantrums, often up to fifty or sixty times a day. She also performed repetitive behaviors, flapped her arms and spun in circles, and echoed others' speech. Cindy often got caught up in rituals and routines which kept her from going about her daily business. In addition to these behaviors, Cindy had difficulty judging social situations. She had a hard time interpreting language and had difficulty with abstract thought. It took a lot of prompting from her family members to get her to take part in conversation. These social issues made it quite difficult for Cindy to make friends. In school, she quickly fell behind her classmates and even her younger siblings.

Cindy and her parents began noticing subtle improvements after just a few sessions of Neurotherapy. After about fifteen treatments, her mother noticed that she was acting much more like her sisters and other children. Cindy was able to participate more in conversations. She became more emotionally flexible and less mechanical in her behaviors and speech. She had all but stopped obsessing about the time and even began to break out of her rituals. Eventually, Cindy's teachers noticed significant development in her reading and listening comprehension skills. By the end of her treatment, Cindy was able to have play dates and could even ask her mother to leave her alone with her friends.

David, 18 years old, Autism "Chipping Away at Autism" written by David's Mom:

David is almost nineteen years old. At 245 pounds, he's a big boy. Sometimes he acts like a giant 3 year old, although he can find any obscure website effortlessly. His interests range from sports to Bill Nye to obnoxious game and comedy shows. Which he likes to repeat. A lot. His biggest problem is expressive language. All the words seem to be in there, but they don't come out in the form of sentences. Besides, as far as he's concerned, I'm psychic, so communicating in short hand is adequate.

We've done the usual gamut of therapies - special diets, supplements, sensory therapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, and even the drug rout when he was younger. The drug therapy made him easier to manage in school but nothing else. Diet and supplements improved his overall health - he has asthma - but it wasn't enough to boost his language, and he had a number of residual problems that didn't budge, including chewing on his hands and toe walking.

David's toe walking wasn't very obvious. I doubt he was even off his heels by half an inch. Being up on his heels for years have given him calf muscles a linebacker would envy. His gait is awkward, which is odd for a child so in love with sports and generally well coordinated. Nothing would bring his heels down, not even bribery. In only a few sessions, the toe walking stopped and his gait is much more normal now.

His hand chewing is partly a result of anxiety but also seems to be a physical response of some kind. He never broke the skin, but he developed calluses. Again, a few sessions of Neurotherapy, and whatever was bothering him abated. It's now very rare to see him chew his hands.

Bit by bit he's developed greater independence, and I don't have to prod him much. For awhile when he was frustrated, he was tearing shirts. (I blame Hulk Hogan for that one.) Over the years we lost a number of windows to thrown objects and couches due to bouncing. One of the more common comments I've received over the years how does he keep his weight up, since he was always in motion. He's been calming down noticeably over the course of the year. He's less frustrated now, probably because he's more connected to his environment. When we couldn't go swimming at the local pond because of an impending storm, he took the news calmly. I've even caught him sitting quietly outside.

The nonproductive TV talk is no longer a constant presence. In fact, I've had trouble locating him in stores and at the library a few times because he wasn't doing his familiar TV talk. I'm also not repeating myself as much. Language seems to be making more sense. He sometimes felt he was being yelled at when I was talking to someone else, and he would get very upset. This doesn't happen nearly as much anymore. Derek has auditory processing problems. In fact, when he watches TV, he puts on closed captioning, something that he figured out by himself. There are times when Derek seems to be functionally deaf. His hearing has been checked twice, so it should be fine, however, words haven't always registered very well. He also has the common quirk of not understanding how pronouns work. Over the past year, the pronoun confusion hasn't always been present. His awareness for spoken words has increased, and there are times when he's actually spoken appropriately in short bursts, using his real voice and his own sentences, and not something he's heard on the computer or TV.

At eighteen, he has a lot of habits to unlearn, but most young adults with autism are not progressing at this point. He's still moving forward, and neurofeedback is responsible for that.

LYME DISEASE

Jerry, father of 18 year old H.S. drop out due to severe chronic Lyme Disease, muscle pain, Poor Memory, trouble retaining new information, chronic nausea, slow processing

"My son was beaten down by 3 years of suffering with a half dozen symptoms, his life severely circumscribed by his sickness. To cope, he was on a kind of auto pilot of limited activity and behavior. When he started at Advanced Neurotherapy it was the only treatment of any kind that he was receiving. After a number of visits, I can only describe his initial response as being a 'waking up', a break out of his auto pilot existence.  It was not all positive, it also meant confronting the bleakness of his 3 years of pain. But it was the beginning of a dramatic improvement in combination with additional therapies that were undertaken. At this writing the story is not yet finished. But I have no doubt that the treatment received at Advanced Neurotherapy is in part responsible for my son regaining his active life back."
